In Revenge of the Sith, Commander Cody stands in a spot, points at Obi-Wan, and says “blast him!” From that perspective, AMG nailed it with Cody’s theme. He likes to stand in a spot and blast things. Furthermore, in Revenge of the Sith Cody isn’t seen much, and I think that will be similar in the competitive Shatterpoint scene. I’d love to be wrong though, he looks so cool.

Cody costs 4PC, which is a pretty standard secondary cost. For context, CC-7567 Captain Rex and Padawan Ahsoka Tano are also 4PC secondaries with the Galactic Republic tag. That’s a high baseline that’s been established.

We’ve Got a Big Problem …. indeed! At first glance it seems like a great ability, but really you probably aren’t going to have range 5 on an enemy during Cody’s first activation. Maybe if you use Rex’s Get a Move On you can, but that ability is often better used elsewhere. Generally speaking I wouldn’t be using my Shatterpoint on Cody, so he’s probably only activating twice in a game, maybe three times. That means you only get this tactic ability off once, maybe twice. When you do get it to trigger, expose followed up immediately by a big attack can be pretty powerful on some normally defensive characters.

Defensive Maneuver is a pretty standard clone ability. Hunkers are nice to get extra ranged defense and you get extra value from them if you bring Cody’s friend General Obi-Wan Kenobi. Do note that Cody is the only clone in wave 1 who doesn’t get Brothers in Arms, so he won’t get Steadfast from his hunker token.

Sharpshooter 2 and ignoring cover with Say Goodnight, Clanker! is quite similar to Gar Saxon’s sniping profile. However, unlike Gar, Cody doesn’t have an opportunity for a free focus. Potentially bypassing expertise with expose and cover with this ability is pretty nice, but standing still to focus and shoot is not nice in a game where movement is so critical. Defensive Maneuver helps a bit there to get a dash to position Cody, but it’s still limiting.

Bring it Down! is the first reroll ability we’ve seen in Shatterpoint. Clones have a lot of hunker access, and range 4 is a pretty big bubble if you keep Cody central, so those triggers aren’t too hard to get. But how useful are those rerolls? Well, 212th clones go from 3.5 average successes before defense to 4.1 with the rerolls. The 501st go from 4.4 to 5.1, and Clone Commandos from 4.0 to 4.6. So on average, a little over half a success. That’s not fantastic. Secondaries often provide a lot of support for their strike teams, and a conditional reroll to get half an extra success is not great as a main supporting ability.

It’s nice that Cody can toss 9 attack dice ignoring cover, but his expertise chart doesn’t do much for results. If he can focus for 9 dice he’s averaging 5.2 success before defense. The extra damage he gets from expertise is probably usually just 1, which isn’t all that impressive, especially since moving one more spot down the attack tree is often better. His tree can give a lot of damage if you’re attacking an enemy that’s already pinned (hello 212th Coordinated Fire: Pin). He doesn’t have great accesses to pushes or conditions, so the tree is a bit one dimensional. Honestly it feels a lot like Gar’s offense, but harder to get the 9 dice attack. It feels like Cody was toned down a bit offensively because of his expose ability, but as we noted that can be tough to get off. If he has to move up and shoot someone without a focus he’s basically a single character 212th clone, which is not what I want from a secondary.

Defensively Cody is nothing special. Phase II Clone Armor is an ok defensive expertise, but only 4 dice. However, you can pay force for the dash and hunker to improve defensively. Once again, I’m very surprised he doesn’t get Brothers in Arms, so the hunker is less value than for other clones.

Overall, Cody has felt like Gar with much worse mobility. He tries to make up for it with his dice reroll aura but I find that to have marginal benefits. He wants to be in a clone list but I’d much rather have Rex or Padawan Ahsoka for the same cost. Both can affect objective play much more than Cody while still doing decent damage.

I don’t want to get too down on Cody. His value may go way up as we get more clone supports. He also has the Clone Commando tag so maybe there will be some synergy for that in the future. Currently he just has too many things he wants to do. Some people seem to love him though, so your mileage may vary.
